Deer Management Public Forum Results

DEER MANAGEMENT PUBLIC FORUM
Prior to the adoption of the no-feed ordinance and an archery hunting ordinance, a public forum was held in August 2011 to discuss areas of concern regarding overabundant deer populations in Creve Coeur.

At the public forum, Urban Wildlife Biologist Erin Shank from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) shared resources, discussed concerns, explored possible solutions and answered questions from residents.

Based on roadside deer carcass disposal data, the areas of concern were concentrated in the southwest corner of the City, an area approximately two-square miles west of I-270 and along and south of Ladue Road.

The City has received numerous calls from residents regarding the deer population. Primary justifications for reducing the deer population includes:

  • Reducing the number of deer-vehicle collisions
  • Addressing aggressive or overly bold deer, which is often seen in areas where deer have not been exposed to predators for several generations
  • Alleviating landscape damage from browse and antler rub

According to the MDC, options for deer population management include controlled hunting, sharpshooting and trap and kill methods.

Based on the feedback from the residents at the forum and information presented by the MDC, City Council passed a no-feed ordinance and a bow hunting ordinance to address the issue.
