The City Council recently approved a new Solar Powered Street Light Cost-Share Program, offering a more cost-effective way for residents to have street lights installed in neighborhoods with underground power lines. Solar powered lights are energy efficient LED fixtures with a separate collector panel mounted on the pole which can be aimed at the sun for optimum energy collection.
The program is a 50/50 cost share between the sponsor and the City. The estimated total cost to install each light is approximately $5,000. Based on this estimate, both the City and the sponsor would be responsible to pay approximately $2,500 per light. A more accurate cost will be available once project bids are received.
Solar street light installation requests can be sponsored by subdivision trustees or a group of residents. To request street light installation, the applicant sponsor must submit an application and supporting materials to the Department of Public Works, including a petition signed by all residents within 150 feet of the proposed street light.
City staff will accept applications for this program through March 31, 2024. The project will be bid to secure pricing, with installation planned for summer 2024. For more information, please view the program policy or contact the Department of Public Works at 314-872-2533.
