[ARCHIVED] Safely Drain Swimming Pool Water

Swimming Pool

When the time comes to drain your swimming pool water, be sure to dispose of the water in a way that is safe, follows City code and adheres to Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) guidelines.

Before draining any pool water, ensure the chlorine levels are low and the pH level falls between 5.5–11.5. Test kits are typically available for purchase at pool supply stores. The water should also be clean, clear and free of algae.

Pool water can be drained either onto an adjacent paved street or directly into an MSD stormwater inlet. Do not drain your pool into your sewer lateral or into the MSD sanitary sewer—both require a permit from MSD and could result in sewer backups into your home or your neighbors’ homes. While draining the pool, water flow should be monitored to ensure that it goes where intended, does not cause erosion and does not cause stormwater facilities to overflow.

Be a good neighbor: avoid discharging any water onto adjacent property—it creates a nuisance for neighbors and violates Ordinance No. 5312 of the City’s Residential Building Code.
